Currently I am teaching at Creston Middle School as
a Literature/ Language Arts & Excel teacher and I am the leader
of the Explorer Team. I have taught for a total of nine years
(two of which were in Winder, Georgia and three at McFarland Middle
School in IPS). I have also spent many summers as a swimming
instructor and while student teaching; I was the assistant swim
coach for both boys and girls at Lebanon High School. While
teaching in Georgia, I was also the head coach of the Winder Barrow
High School swim team (we practiced at the University of
Georgia!). It has been a while since I have been coaching and
I truly miss it!
I
was born in Valparaiso, Indiana, where I first learned the love of
swimming. I swam in the club program there as a child,
but I didn’t start becoming serious about swimming until I
moved to Zionsville, Indiana. I swam with the
Zionsville Swim Club for many years and developed my skills as a
breaststroker. While swimming in Zionsville, I did compete at
State in the 200 IM Relay. I continued my quest to be a good
breaststroker into high school, but my knees did not like the
training. I was forced to find a new event and I am glad that
I did! I finally found the event that I loved to swim and that
I was much more suited. I began swimming the 500 free. If
there was a longer distance available at the high school level, I
would have swum it. I loved trying to perfect my stroke
technique and turns so much that my coach had me teach some of the
other swimmers my turns. I may have never been an Olympian or
even qualified for State in the 500, but that didn’t matter
to me. I found an event that I loved and it inspired me to
pass that on to others. I did not continue swimming
competitively during college, but I have never stopped loving the
sport.
